Nivi users talk about Nivi
Instead of us telling you what is so great about Nivi, we decided this month's newsletter will be devoted to showing you what we've been able to achieve from those we've helped. — Sidd
Loise, 22, discovered Nivi on Facebook. “I didn’t know anything about contraceptives. I couldn't ask my parents or my friends about it, and I didn’t want to ask my doctor. So when I saw Nivi, I was excited, because I knew I could ask someone who won't judge me.” A niece’s unplanned pregnancy at age 16 was another reason she wanted to learn more. Loise plans to go to university next year and would like to pursue a career before she has children. “Young people need a service like Nivi.”
Dennis, 29, met his wife, Nora, 24, in 2013. In 2014, a daughter was born. The couple would like more children, but not right away. “I was volunteering at a local hospital, and that’s where I learned about family planning,” Dennis says. “I was shy about asking questions, but I was interested. I wanted to plan my life." He continues, "It’s important to involve men in the process. When more men learn about the importance of family planning, they will let their wives use it and then women won’t have to hide.”
Since Nivi rolled out in Bungoma County, in Western Kenya, Paul, who dispenses contraception, says his weekly clientele has risen from 2 or 3 to 15 – and the clients are “fully prepared” to commit to a method, after engaging with the service. Paul says he believes that by making family planning more accessible – particularly for young girls – Nivi has helped reduce the rate of teen pregnancy in his community. “It is one way we have avoided abortions and early death in these young kids.”
