Do you know the profile of those most likely to seek a FP method recommendation?
Dear Friends,
We have some exciting news...
Nivi has exceeded 500,000 users globally!
That's more than 500,000 men and women in Kenya and India that are better equipped to make informed decisions about their reproductive health!
To celebrate, we've put together a new Nivi Insight that provides insight into the profiles of those seeking contraceptive recommendations. Check it out on Medium or read below!
Sincerely,

Guess Who! : What Nivi’s contraceptive screening tells us about the people that want method recommendations
A focus of Nivi’s early campaigns has been to engage users who are interested in preventing pregnancy and to provide personalized recommendations for family planning methods through a screening aligned with global standards. In Kenya, more than 20,000 people have completed our FP screening and received referrals to nearby clinics where they can get the recommended methods. Users can opt into screenings a number of ways:
Ask a question that our software recognizes as a request for guidance on the type of method that is right for them
Chat with Nivi about a related topic and act on a prompt to start the screening
Respond to a “nudge” from Nivi that offers a screening and personalized method recommendation
In addition to helping individuals take control of their bodies by providing them with trusted information, we learn a lot about how to better serve our users.
So who are the people that are seeking a method recommendation and primed to take up a method?
The following is an analysis of women that have completed Nivi’s FP screening over a 3-month period from July through September, 2019.
They are single and partnered.
There is about an equal split among Nivi users that report having a partner and those that are single. The confidential nature of Nivi’s digital chat allows people to share this information without feeling judgement.
They are equally likely to have a child or be without child.
Approximately half of Nivi users have at least one child. Of those, 32% have given birth in the past 6 months and are looking to prevent another pregnancy.Nivi shows great potential for promoting post-pregnancy FP!
They are more likely to not use a method currently, but may have used one in the past.
Approximately 32% of women who opt for a screening are currently using a method, some of whom are looking to make a switch. Sixty-two percent are not currently using a method, and of those, 60% have used a method previously but have discontinued use. Nivi can also help gauge the client-perceived quality of provider counseling by asking questions like the method information index plus (MII+) and helping consumers with lower MII+ to better understand their contraceptive options. Higher MII+ scores are associated with longer (implicitly more satisfied) contraceptive continuation.
They want to prevent pregnancy for more than 1 year (even though Kenya’s current method mix does not reflect this preference!)
A whopping 82% of women want to prevent pregnancy for more than one year. Approximately 6% want a permanent method, which is consistent with the 5.6% of women in Kenya reported to choose sterilization according DHS statistics. Seventy-two percent of women using contraception in Kenya are getting LARCs; 48% of those are injections that last between 2 and 3 months, suggesting there may be an untapped demand for IUDs and implants that cover women for more than 1 year without taking additional action.
We are excited to bring these and other rich insights to our partners in Kenya and look forward to continuing to contribute to data-informed programming and supply chain decisions!
