Today, healthcare is increasingly digital and it is evident that digital platforms significantly shape consumer's healthcare decisions. BUT! Is awareness enough?
Take cervical cancer for example. Despite increased global awareness over the last decade, the uptake of HPV vaccines and screenings has remained low in Kenya and other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This situation underscores a disconnect between health consumers and stakeholders and highlights that awareness alone may not suffice to increase uptake, especially with high-stakes conditions like cervical cancer. So one must wonder, how can we leverage the digital platforms to support a consumers' healthcare journeys from awareness to action?

In 2023, with our partners at MSD, we took on the challenge to find what was causing the low uptake in Kenya. Understanding health seeking behaviours, willingness to pay for the vaccine & screenings, readiness to act and barriers to access were the first part of the puzzle which made clear that lack of financial resources was the biggest barrier in accessing HPV Vaccine/preventative screening services for a wide majority of Kenyans.
Then, with ARK Venture Studio, we uncovered consumer insights around insurance coverage needs & preferences to design a financing solution that enables uptake. This final piece of the puzzle birthed APA Insurance's Femina Plus plan that covers preventative services, including HPV Vaccine right from the get go. Super happy to tell you that the FeminaPlus product won the #BestVulnerableCustomerInitiative award at the Insurance CX Awards 2023.
