Introducing Risk Stratification in the askNivi Maternal Health Journey
Pregnancy is a time of immense change, both physically and emotionally. While most pregnancies progress smoothly, there are moments when unexpected health issues arise. Early detection of these issues can be a critical factor in determining the outcome of the pregnancy, ensuring the well-being of both the mother and the baby.
Risk stratification is one of the most valuable tools in maternal healthcare, and it describes methods to identify potential health risks early and accurately. Risk stratification has traditionally been seen as a way for healthcare providers to prioritize care, tailor treatments, monitor progress, improve outcomes, and even inform public health decisions. With its consumer-facing perspective, Nivi can take this approach directly to patients, helping them to act on the signs and symptoms they experience in real-time. With its maternal health partners, Nivi will soon add Risk Stratification to the Maternal Health Journey, improving early detection of pregnancy risks and boosting timely interventions for safer outcomes.
This early identification of risk factors can significantly improve the trajectory of a pregnancy, preventing severe complications during labor, delivery, and postpartum. When potential complications are detected in time, healthcare providers can intervene with targeted treatments, reducing the likelihood of more severe issues later in pregnancy or during delivery. This early intervention helps ensure healthier outcomes for both mother and baby, significantly lowering the chances of requiring emergency care.
The benefits of risk stratification go beyond the individual pregnancy. By implementing this approach, healthcare providers can anticipate and manage risks before they escalate into costly, resource-intensive complications.
A Tool Aligned with Best Practices
Risk stratification is a natural extension of the guidelines in antenatal care (ANC). Healthcare providers routinely monitor vital indicators—like blood pressure and glucose levels—throughout pregnancy. Still, risk stratification takes this further by using these indicators to assess and categorize risk dynamically. This proactive approach aligns with the overarching goal of modern healthcare: improving patient outcomes through early, preventative care.
Introducing a Wellness and Health Education Initiative for Women in Kenya - a collaborative effort by Nivi & YuBuntu
In the December ‘23 Newsletter, we announced our partnership with ARK Venture Studio to help launch APA Insurance’s "Femina Plus" in Kenya, an innovative, affordable insurance product covering women’s cancers and preventive care like the HPV vaccine. We are thrilled to announce Nivi’s latest initiative in partnership with YuBuntu, designed to empower women in Kenya through enhanced wellness and health education. Starting with Phase 1, this initiative is focused on driving awareness and action around female cancer prevention via the askNivi chatbot.
Our initial marketing campaigns target women across social media, encouraging them to begin a health journey emphasizing cancer prevention through critical services like the HPV vaccine and regular screenings. As part of the pilot, we’ve onboarded over 700 women with free access to interactive health content and receive weekly insights, tips, and quizzes about health and well-being. We continually optimize our engagement's timing, content, and frequency to sustain their participation.
Affordable Wellness Offering
To make preventative care more accessible, we’re also creating awareness around a comprehensive wellness product that our partner YuBuntu has built with APA Insurance. At an affordable price of just 500 KSH, this product covers essential services, including the HPV vaccine and cervical cancer screenings, helping women overcome financial barriers and take control of their health.
Exploring Channels & Partnerships
We’re testing online and offline distribution channels while finalizing partnerships with healthcare providers and organizations. These partnerships will ensure our users receive holistic support throughout their health journey.
Looking Ahead: Expansion & Scale
As we look beyond this pilot, our vision is to make a lasting impact on healthcare access for women across Kenya. The insights from this pilot will guide us as we scale, and we believe this initiative will significantly enhance women’s health in Kenya. We’re excited to share our progress as we work towards improving access to preventative care and addressing the specific health needs of Kenyan women.
